I have a great work ethic - I love being with people - but my boss treats me like garbage. I've always been really detailed with my work; I always get great feedback from clients; but it's never good enough for my boss. She berates me and even says negative things about me in front of other team members. This makes me feel really bad about myself and I'm second guessing my skills. She also tries to short change me on my hours and pay. I've tried to speak to her about it, but she threatened to fire me if I want to complain. I need the job and in this market, I can't be sure that I can get another job. Do you have any advice?
Stuck with a Tyrant Boss
Dear Stuck with a Tyrant Boss:
I’m pretty sure its safe to say we all have been in a “Horrible Bosses” situation. No matter how hard you work your butt off, they don’t acknowledge it or appreciate it!
It can be very frustrating dealing with a bitter person that seems they're out to get everybody in life.
My mother always told me with people like that, just “kill them with kindness” ...and I really always took my mothers advice.
First off you are an exceptional person who deserves to be treated with respect and dignity. Everyone should be. It is the Golden Rule - treat others as you yourself want to be treated.
You should not be second guessing your skills, you should be second guessing your job, and telling yourself I deserve better!
She seems very unprofessional talking to other co-workers about you. That sounds harassing and bullying, and if she is abusing her authority and treating you like that, it must be reported. If you cannot speak to her about this issue, then you need to go to someone higher than her - say someone in human resources or her manager or supervisor. If she is the owner of the company, consider the labour board or human rights commission in your area.
Be sure to keep track of everything she does and says to you. Write it down with dates and examples of the incidents, and especially of names of people who witnessed the behaviour.
Please don’t go through life being treated this way in your job, school or home. You can always change your situation.
